How long have you lived in the Dallas area?

Your whole life, a few years, or perhaps you're new?

Regardless, Uptown Dallas has a few secrets you probably never knew.

Do you know what they are?

Let's find out.

Where Is Uptown Dallas?

The area that's considered Uptown Dallas is just north of downtown Dallas and bordered by Central Expressway (US-75) to the east, a block north of Blackburn St. on the northeast, Katy Trail on the northwest, Bookhout St. on the west, and Woodall Rodgers Freeway (Spur 366) on the south.

Uptown Dallas Then and Now

The Uptown Dallas neighborhood has been around for about 130 years, but it wasn't until 1993 that Uptown Dallas, Inc. was formed. Uptown Dallas, Inc. is in charge of just about everything, including public safety, security, area enhancements, improved infrastructure, and planting a minimum of 30,000 flowers every year. But it wasn't always that way.

If you've been in the DFW area for a while, you probably remember that in the 1980s the Uptown Dallas area was one that was, well, a bit scary and in major decline. And to make matters worse, the '80s was when the real estate market collapsed. But out of the downturn, a new Dallas horizon was born.

Major real estate developers began scooping up the land, had it cleared and started building unique lofts, apartments, and townhouses...and that was just the beginning that led to Uptown Dallas as it is today. In the 1990s it was realized that there was a huge demand for high-end city living which led the way for developers to consider designing and building out the area making it into a walkable neighborhood.

Uptown Dallas Today

Now, Uptown Dallas boasts 200 restaurants as it continues to grow, it has hundreds of shops, 592 acres of dedicated green space, and so much more that it couldn't possibly be put down on one page.

Uptown Dallas is now poised to shine with 98 percent of the land having been developed, it's time for it to mature and prosper as about 20,000 people currently call the Uptown Dallas neighborhood home.

Looking Back

For those of you who are fairly new here, you would never have guessed that the Uptown Dallas area was a depressed, downtrodden area full of transients and vacant buildings, undeveloped land and an eyesore to anyone who had to drive through it. This makes you truly appreciate what it has become today. A bright light accenting the surrounding Dallas areas and a beacon of hope for the future and what is yet to come.

Remember These Old Hot Spots...

➣ Reunion Arena?

It was a sports and entertainment arena, home of the Dallas Cowboys and many concert headliners. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 2010 but it was the place to be for anything entertainment back in the day.

➣ Bronco Bowl?

It was a multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue (live music, school proms, sports attractions, etc.) that was demolished in late 2003 to make way for a new Home Depot.

➣ Baby Doe's Matchless Mine?

Baby Doe's was probably the best-kept dining secret in Dallas with its very own live donkey to greet you at the entrance. It was located next to the iconic Dallas Waterfall Billboard, which, by the way, looked much different back then. The ambiance was built-in as it was an actual mine no longer in service. But you couldn't help but notice the grand stature of this 4-Star restaurant sitting perched high up on the cliff as you drove down Interstate 35 wondering how to get to it (which wasn't easy). Baby Doe's had a restaurant upstairs and down an old path to the basement was a bar. The restaurant was a place where you could sit and enjoy the views of downtown Dallas while you ate. This iconic restaurant was demolished in 2006 and replaced with luxury apartments which now hold its place.

Ahhh, memories!
