To the men and women of the armed services who made the ultimate sacrifice for the rest of us. Thank you.

1. Dallas Symphony Orchestra Memorial Day Concert at Flagpole Hill

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra continues its Memorial Day concert tradition this year from Flag Pole Hill in Dallas.  That's over in Lake Highlands area near the north end of White Rock Lake.  The weather is forecast to be awesome, so have fun in a relaxed atmosphere that is free and open to the public.  Pre-concert activities start at 6:30 p.m. with the DSO performance at 8:15 p.m.  Eat before you go - there's no concessions...which leads us to #2.

2. Deep Ellum Brew-BQ

Deep Ellum Brewing Co. celebrates on Memorial Day weekend with craft beer; barbecue; live music by Somebody's Darling, Atlantis Aquarius and Matt Tedd; and carnival games. Price of admission includes BBQ plate, 3 beer coupons, live music. Dogs allowed in the field only. Here's a link to the event's FB page: https://www.facebook.com/events/113807559480580/

3. Dallas Arboretum Memorial Day Weekend

In honor of our armed forces, the Arboretum offers free admission into the main garden on May 25-28 to active duty members and veterans of the U.S. military, and to first responders with a valid photo ID. On Memorial Day (May 28), the celebration continues with face painting and a petting zoo in the Pecan Grove. Enjoy $2 hot dogs and $2 root beer floats at the Terrace Cafe.  Seriously, you're never too old for a petting zoo.

4. Carry the Load

Reverchon Park in Dallas hosts the two-day event featuring music, inspirational speeches, stories of fallen heroes, flag ceremonies and more. No registration or payment is required to attend — we simply ask you to respect those who have given everything to protect and serve us all.

Carry The Load is a non-profit dedicated to providing active, meaningful ways to honor and celebrate the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes — military, law enforcement, firefighters and first responders.

What started as a mission to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day has broadened to include more than just our military heroes and more than just the one holiday. Carry The Load works to bring all Americans together to participate in honoring our nation’s heroes every day.  The event starts at noon on Sunday, May 27, and ends at 4:40 p.m. on Monday, May 28.

5. Texas Pool Memorial Day Party

The Texas-shaped pool opens for the season with a Memorial Day Party. There will be pool games and contests and tasty goodies from the grill and/or snack bar. Guests are also welcome to bring in coolers with food and soft drinks. At 3 p.m., guests and members will observe the National Moment of Rembrance to honor fallen heroes. American Idol's Ron Bultongez and the Youth Trumpet and Taps Corps will perform, and Miss Plano Ashlee Gilchrist will make an appearance.

Admission is free for military, veterans, first responders, teachers and Texas Pool members. Entry for everyone else is $1 per person / $5 per family.
